9.  Square pegs and round holes   [9th & 10th Dec 2024]

In my introduction I mentioned false starts I'd suffered. I've just hit another. I learned that the reason things were going wrong with posing Victoria in CLO 3D was that hair and shoes are a special case and need to be registered - else they will not be posed along with the avatar. This is the very issue I've been having.

Welding her hair and shoes to her body, though it works, is not the right way to go about it. I've spent the past couple of days trying to work through tutorials to get this right ... and I've failed. The latest failure was caused by the fact that 3ds Max was to be used as an intermediary between DAZ 3D and CLO 3D. I actually have access to this product as a student - but I have no clue how to use it ... and the tutorial doesn't explain what they're doing. My screen layout doesn't even look the same as theirs. It could be just as simple as they are using the 2014 version and I have the 2025 version.

So ... I've taken the very painful decision to put importing and exporting to one side for the time being.

The alternative is to work in DAZ 3D with DAZ 3D assets (Victoria and Michael) and work in CLO 3D with CLO 3D assets. Meet Mia and Leo ...

A female model with her arms out to her sides, wearing a kaftan. View full-size (protected)

This is Mia. She doesn't look as good Victoria as she's not photo realistic. No offence, Mia. That said, the benefits outweigh the negatives as she is fully posable ... and her hair and shoes are CLO 3D hair and shoes, so they all work.

A male model with his arms by his sides, wearing a pair of swim shorts and trainers. View full-size (protected)

This is Leo. (he looks a bit fed up, really, doesn't he?)  Same deal as with Mia, not photo realistic, but everything works as it should.

The biggest issue with putting importing and exporting of assets on hold is that in order to work with different software I will need to duplicate effort. In other words, if I make a pair of shorts in CLO 3D, if I don't import them into DAZ 3D I'll have to procure a pair within Daz 3D.

This situation is by no means sustainable, so I will revisit the importing and exporting issue when time and energy permit.
